Large, XL & Extra Large Dog Beds | Stylish, Durable and Washable

A large dog bed takes up as much floor space as an armchair, so it should look like something you chose, not something you tolerate. Our Large dog beds, also sold as XL or extra large dog beds, measure 115 × 85 cm and are made in our own workshop in the Netherlands from fabrics we pick the way you would pick a sofa: chunky giant corduroy, soft velvet, tough canvas cotton, classic tartan and a wipe-clean leather look, in more than 40 colours. Underneath the good looks is a bed built for a Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd or Boxer: about 175 litres of EPS beads that mould to your dog's body, reinforced seams that survive years of claws and circling, and a cover that zips off and goes in the washing machine. Is your dog bigger than a German Shepherd? Then look at our Superlarge XXL & XXXL dog beds (140 × 95 cm).

Why choose a Large / XL dog bed from Dog's Companion?

    • Designed for your interior – upholstery-grade fabrics and colours that sit naturally next to your sofa, your floor and your rug. With extra covers you change the look with the season, or when you redecorate, without buying a new bed.
    • Built to last – hard-wearing fabrics, reinforced seams and sturdy zips, made for daily use by a heavy dog. The filling can be topped up, so this is a bed you buy once, not every year.
    • Washable, properly – large dogs bring in sand, mud and rain. The cover comes off in seconds and goes in the machine; the inner cushion can be washed too. A clean bed, not a bed that smells of dog.
    • Support for muscles and joints – the resilient EPS-bead filling spreads the weight and relieves pressure points. Big dogs put more strain on their joints; a well-filled bed makes a difference, especially as they get older.
    • Room to stretch – 115 × 85 cm lets a large dog lie on its side, sprawl on its back or stretch out fully, instead of curling up on a bed that is too small.

A dog bed that belongs in the living room

Most large dog beds are made to disappear: grey, black, nylon. Ours are made to be seen. The giant corduroy has the chunky rib of a 1970s armchair; the velvet catches the light like a good cushion; the canvas cotton has the honest, matte look of a linen sofa; the tartan and stripes bring a country-house note; the leather look suits a modern, minimal room and wipes clean. Pick the fabric and colour that match your interior, and give the bed a second cover for winter, summer or simply a change. Your dog gets the most comfortable spot in the house, and the house looks better for it.

    Suitable for large dog breeds

Our Large (XL) dog beds are the right fit for Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Flat-Coated Retrievers, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, Boxers, Weimaraners, Labradoodles and other large Doodles, Basset Hounds and Rottweilers – and any other dog of a similar size and weight. Giant breeds such as Great Danes, Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards are better served by the Superlarge size.

    Size & dimensions

    • Dimensions: 115 × 85 cm – suitable for dogs of roughly 95–115 cm in length, measured from nose to the base of the tail.
    • Filling: about 175 litres of small EPS beads.
    • Cover: removable, machine-washable; extra covers are available in every fabric and colour.

Not sure between Large and Superlarge? Measure your dog lying down and add about 20 cm, or use our dog bed size guide. When in doubt, choose the bigger size – a dog never complains about too much room.

    Materials & styles

Every Large dog bed comes in several fabrics: giant corduroy (chunky ribs, very hard-wearing), canvas cotton (breathable and tough), velvet (soft and elegant), tartan (classic checks), leather look (wipes clean, ideal for heavy shedders) and a dirt-repellent coated fabric for the garden, the car or a dog that comes home wet.

Frequently Asked Questions about Large & XL Dog Beds

Is a Large dog bed the same as XL or extra large?

In our range, yes. Large is 115 × 85 cm and is what most shops sell as XL or extra large. Our next size up, Superlarge (140 × 95 cm), is sold as XXL / XXXL.

What size dog bed does a Labrador need?

A Large / XL bed of 115 × 85 cm. The same goes for Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Boxers and Weimaraners. A Labrador that likes to stretch out fully, or a particularly big male, will also be happy on a Superlarge.

Which breeds are Large / XL dog beds for?

Labrador, Golden Retriever, Flat-Coated Retriever, German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, Boxer, Weimaraner, Labradoodle, Basset Hound and Rottweiler, plus other breeds of a similar size. For Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands and other giant breeds, choose Superlarge.

    Will it fit my interior?

That is the idea. Choose from more than 40 fabrics and colours – from a quiet beige canvas to a deep green velvet or a bold tartan – and match the bed to your sofa, floor or rug. Extra covers let you change the look later without replacing the bed.

How long does a Dog's Companion dog bed last?

Years. The fabrics are chosen for wear, the seams are reinforced, the zips are sturdy, and the EPS filling can be topped up with our bead refill when it settles. When a cover eventually shows its age, you replace the cover, not the bed.

    What filling is used?

About 175 litres of small EPS beads. The beads mould to your dog's body, relieve pressure and keep their shape night after night.

Is the Large dog bed washable?

Yes. The cover is removable and machine-washable. The inner cushion can be washed too – the filling doesn't absorb water, so wash it with a mild detergent, rinse thoroughly and let it dry fully (outside in summer, near a radiator in winter), turning it so it dries evenly.

Does it help older dogs or dogs with joint problems?

Yes. The flexible EPS filling supports the body evenly and reduces pressure on the joints, which is why it is often chosen for older dogs and dogs with hip dysplasia or arthritis.

    Can I use it outdoors?

The standard fabrics are for indoor use. For the garden, the car or a dog that comes home wet, choose the dirt-repellent coated version.
