    Tartan dog beds: a classic check for a country house or a city flat

    A tartan dog bed does something most dog beds cannot: it looks like it was chosen, not tolerated. Ours are made from a woven check fabric with the firm, dry hand of upholstery cloth, in eight patterns from the deep green and navy of Black Watch to the red of Royal Stewart. Underneath is the same bed as every Dog's Companion dog bed: an inner cushion filled with EPS beads that moulds to the way your dog lies, reinforced seams and a sturdy zip, made in our own workshop in the Netherlands. The cover comes off and goes in the washing machine, and there is a tartan extra cover when you want a spare.

    Which tartan?

    Eight checks, from quiet to bold. Scottish grey and Country Field are the discreet ones for a neutral room. Black Watch and Dress Gordon bring the classic green and navy of a country house. Royal Stewart and Dress Stewart are the red ones, for a hall or a Christmas living room. The Manhattan checks in camel and mid blue are the modern take: a larger, softer check for a lighter interior.     Tartan is a fabric with a history, and it behaves like one: the colours deepen a little with the years, the weave softens, and the bed starts to look like it has always stood by the fireplace. That is the point of a dog bed made from upholstery cloth instead of nylon. Match the check to what is already in the room, a red Stewart against a green sofa, Black Watch on an oak floor, Manhattan camel in a pale Scandinavian scheme, and give the bed a second extra cover in a plain canvas or corduroy for the summer.     Frequently asked questions about tartan dog beds

    Is the tartan woven or printed?

    Woven. The check is in the fabric itself, which is why it looks like upholstery cloth, wears evenly and does not fade or peel the way a printed cover does.

    Is the cover washable?

    Yes. The cover zips off and goes in the washing machine; follow the care label inside the cover. The inner cushion does not absorb water and can be washed by hand with a mild detergent, rinsed thoroughly and dried completely, turning it now and then.

    Which tartan suits a modern interior?

    Scottish grey, Country Field or the two Manhattan checks. They are quieter and larger in scale, so they read as texture rather than as pattern. Black Watch works in a modern room too, as a dark accent on a light floor.

    Which sizes are available?

    All five: Extra Small (55 × 45 cm), Small (70 × 50 cm), Medium (90 × 70 cm), Large (115 × 85 cm) and Superlarge / XXL (140 × 95 cm). Measure your dog lying down from nose to the base of the tail, add about 20 cm, and take the larger size if in doubt.

    Can I get a tartan cover for a bed I already have?

    Yes, if it is one of ours. The tartan extra covers fit every Dog's Companion inner cushion in the same size, so you can change a plain bed into a tartan one, or keep a spare for washing day.

    Is tartan a good choice for a dog that sheds?

    A darker check such as Black Watch or Scottish grey hides hair between washes far better than a plain light fabric. For heavy shedders the wipe-clean leather look is the other option.

    Will it fit my interior?

    How do I order, and how fast is delivery?

    Order securely online and pay by credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or wire transfer. Orders placed on weekdays before 14:30 are dispatched the same day from our workshop in the Netherlands, with DHL or DPD, typically within 1 to 4 working days across most of Europe.
